You may be eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) through Medicare. Speak with your GP, Paediatrician, or Psychiatrist (Mental health assessments require a longer appointment booking). With a MHCP, your referring doctor can initially refer you for 6 sessions. After these sessions, you'll need to return for a review, and if appropriate, you may be referred for an additional 4 sessions - bringing the total to 10 Medicare-subsidised sessions per calendar year.

The Medicare rebate is $145.25 per session (as of July 2025).

50-minute session — $230

If you have private health extras cover, you may be eligible to claim a rebate for your psychology sessions. Please check with your health fund directly to confirm your level of cover and eligibility.

A doctor’s referral is not required for self-funded or private health appointments.

You cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health insurance rebate for the same session.
